Birds of Pilanesberg Game Reserve

The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is situated in the remains of an extinct volcano. It is near the Sun City Resort in the North West Province.

Over the last 25 years I have taken many bird pics in Pilanesberg Reserve even though the bird numbers have declined drastically during this time. The pictures here were taken from 2006, when I got my first worthwhile telephoto lens for a digital camera, the Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma).

A Common Waxbill

A Yellowbilled Hornbill

Yellowbilled Hornbills used to be very common but in recent years have become increasingly difficult to spot. This could be due to the regular runaway winter fires which destroy their nesting trees.

A Black Duck

The Black Duck is an occasional visitor to the dam at the weir at the turnoff from the main road to the Kgama Loop near Bakubung.
